Västtrafik: Reducing Dependency on Individuals in Digitalization Projects
When Västtrafik, one of Sweden’s largest public transport operators, digitalizes the passenger experience, it is crucial that the business side can actively contribute to the testing work. By introducing Reqtest as the central tool for requirements, testing, and bug reporting, they succeeded. The result? Increased traceability, saved resources, and reduced dependency on individuals in every project.
Västtrafik is responsible for public transport in Västra Götaland and is one of Sweden’s largest public transport operators. The organization runs continuous digitalization projects to improve the passenger experience and streamline internal processes. Back in 2010, Västtrafik adopted Reqtest to manage testing in two major system implementations. Over the years, the tool has become a central part of Västtrafik’s quality assurance, particularly under the leadership of Nasir, who is responsible for testing and the organization’s IT test lab.
“Västtrafik has complex IT systems, most of which are integrated with one another, and several parallel projects run simultaneously. My job is to help the business ensure quality in its projects. Reqtest is one of the tools I provide to enable structured and efficient work with requirements, testing, and bug reporting.”
Reqtest used in hundreds of projects
Since its introduction in 2010, Reqtest has been used to create and manage over 100 projects across multiple departments and initiatives within the organization. A key factor behind this is Nasir’s dedicated work to streamline and standardize quality assurance across Västtrafik.
“When I started at Västtrafik, I quickly realised how Reqtest could make a difference in the testing process. I’ve worked with test strategies for a long time and know how important it is to build a structured and user-friendly process,” says Nasir.
In addition to structuring tests and reporting bugs, Nasir has in recent years also started exploring the requirements module in Reqtest.
“We’ve tested the requirements module in some projects, for example in the ongoing ‘Future Ticket Purchase’ initiative. A major advantage of documenting requirements in Reqtest is that we can trace them all the way back to procurement. That’s very helpful in projects where many departments are involved,” he explains.
“We had to make it easy for the organization to get involved in testing, and with Reqtest we’ve succeeded”

Saving Resources and Reducing Dependency on Individuals
With Reqtest in his toolbox, Nasir can provide a simple way to work in a structured manner with requirements, testing, and bug reporting—regardless of prior experience or technical expertise.
“What really makes a difference is how user-friendly Reqtest is. Many of our employees aren’t technically oriented, yet they can still contribute to the testing process thanks to the tool. We had to make it easy for the organization to get involved in testing, and with Reqtest we’ve succeeded,” says Nasir.
Shared templates and standardized workflows make it easy to get started in new projects, while reducing dependency on specific individuals—something that is critical for a large and complex organization like Västtrafik.
“When we replace resources, we want to avoid projects becoming dependent on individuals. If a new resource joins, it’s valuable that all history is stored in Reqtest. Another example is the Future Ticket Purchase project, where we’ve used Reqtest for requirements management during the procurement of the new system. Since requirements and test cases are documented in the platform, it saves us a lot of time and makes the work more efficient,” Nasir adds.
Future-Proofed Process
Looking ahead, Västtrafik is committed to continued training and ensuring that more employees can take full advantage of Reqtest. Ongoing projects, such as ‘Future Ticket Purchase’ and the new HR system, are already benefiting from the structure and efficiency that Reqtest brings.
“We have a clear direction forward and look forward to developing our use of Reqtest further. We want to make it even easier for our teams to access the tool and leverage its full potential. The goal is to build a structure that will remain strong in future projects as well,” Nasir concludes.
